If we draw an analogy with a house, the center of gravity is the floor we currently live on, and we all keep in the basement the complete collection of our earlier levels of existence . Their batteries are always full, and we can at any time shift down a gear and adopt an earlier level (way of thinking) when the life conditions call for it. In the same way, we all have future levels stored in the attic, and we’re capable of evolving toward these new levels when there’s a lack of congruence between our current way of thinking and an evolution of life conditions.

As a reminder, Spiral Dynamics codifies the process of evolution and the stages of transition from one level of existence to another using points named α, β, γ, and δ, which can be assessed to diagnose and support a transformation.

Instead of using score-based diagnostics (which are more useful in a specific transition phase), we elaborate here on five phases, named (a) through (e), as they can be experienced during a transformation.

NAVIGATING COMPLEXITY, VALUES AND CHANGE

    Why do we resist change? It’s no surprise that individuals reach a breaking point in a professional world where being overloaded is seen as a badge of honor, caught in an endless race for profit and infinite growth. Since this is a sensitive topic for those who have experienced it, readers are invited to approach the description of the stages below with some distance. They don’t necessarily correspond to every case of burnout and don’t constitute a theory or explanation of the phenomenon. The sole purpose is to illustrate what “can happen” when applying the Spiral Dynamics evolution process:

Denial – There’s a good chance that a person who has reached this point of no return previously felt tension around external demands or pressure they placed on themselves. The small adjustments possible in these moments include taking time off, going on vacation, or adjusting their job scope. These adjustments may have temporarily relieved the pressure.

Escape – After taking vacation or making other adjustments, there’s certainly a phase of escape as tensions resurface. We tell ourselves, “it’s only temporary, things will get better once this or that deadline has passed.”

Crisis – When it becomes impossible to escape the tension because it keeps growing, the reflex is to look for solutions in earlier levels of existence.

The order of blue offers a normative outlook and a posture of submission rooted in the postwar economic boom (1950 to 1980). Our Blue mindset whispers to us: “It’s important to have a good job to secure your retirement; it’s not reasonable to consider anything else. Be grateful you even have a job, when so many people don’t.“The power of red offers a posture of domination; our inner red voice whispers to us: “Come on, show them what you’re made of! This is no time to give up, you’re worth more than that… you’re not weak“.

The combination of these elements inevitably pushes us to grit our teeth and keep going down the same path. It’s possible that this self-persuasion effect provides a temporary boost in motivation that increases our resilience. But given enough time, this strategy is more likely to send us crashing straight into the wall than to lead us to admit our vulnerability and ask those around us for help.

Evolution – In the case of burnout, some people manage to step back before reaching the breaking point, let go of everything, and rebuild themselves in a different environment. Unfortunately for others, this realization comes only after reaching the breaking point, requiring rest and a rebuilding process that can take months or even years. During this rebuilding phase, these people develop a need to function in a different professional environment, far from competitiveness and constant pressure. They aspire to work in a collaborative environment, with firmly rooted values and a strong collective culture. They seek to join a team that offers them a strong sense of security and belonging. For them, it’s the emergence of a new way of thinking about the world of work; they sometimes consider a career change or develop new practices to sustainably integrate this new paradigm.

Balance – Once this transformation is integrated, these people find harmony again in a new professional context. They have then evolved toward the green level of existence and feel once again in congruence with their environment.

The evolution of our post-industrial society – an example of collective evolution

At the collective level, we go through similar stages as our society becomes more complex. To identify the arrival of a point of evolution, rupture, or paradigm shift, we need to detect whether yesterday’s solutions to problems are becoming today’s sources of problems.

One example to illustrate this is the economic situation the world found itself in at the end of the Second World War. Europe’s infrastructure and economy had been destroyed. The United States seized the opportunity to rebuild Europe with the Marshall Plan, investing billions of dollars. The goal was to produce as many goods as possible in order to revive the European economy and create a thriving market for American exports. The plan worked: the rubble was cleared, infrastructure was rebuilt, factories were repurposed, and Europe began to produce, produce, and produce some more. All of this created millions of jobs, lifted people out of poverty, and gradually enabled the emergence of a middle class that began to have the means to consume more. By increasing demand for consumer goods, this allowed for even greater production, enriched companies, raised wages, and employed even more workers. A virtuous circle took hold, and the solution responded perfectly to the problems we faced at the end of the war.

Today, it seems obvious that the capitalist system born from this virtuous circle is the source of our most pressing challenges: global warming, soil, air, and water pollution, the depletion of natural resources, excessive use of fossil fuels, the widening gap between rich and poor, the concentration of most of the world’s wealth in a fraction of a percent of the population, and so on. It doesn’t seem like an exaggeration to say that yesterday’s solution has become (at least partially) today’s source of problems.

The evolutionary journey is of course not yet complete, but we can already identify the characteristics of certain stages:

Denial – We’ve known since the 1980s that pollution and the growing use of non-renewable energy are problems. We’ve removed CFCs from aerosols, invented solar panels and wind turbines, introduced widespread recycling (in wealthy countries), reduced our cars’ fuel consumption, and even invented the electric car. As important as these breakthroughs are, they’re only minor adjustments which, even combined, stand no chance of tipping the system and reversing the trend.

Escape – After giving ourselves a clear conscience by recycling our waste, we’ve continued to consume relentlessly, taking low-cost flights for the slightest reason. We’ve even arrived at a kind of resignation: “as long as the whole world isn’t doing it, there’s no point in reducing my consumption or changing my habits.” Tension is rising, catastrophic forecasts about the effects of global warming are multiplying, students have mobilized for months, Greta has toured the world explaining to anyone who will listen that we need to act now. In the midst of this turmoil, the only thing we seem capable of doing (apart from slightly reducing our personal carbon footprint) is complaining about an economic system that puts financial interests ahead of the interests of society and our planet.

Crisis –When it becomes impossible to escape the tension because it keeps growing, the reflex is to look for solutions in earlier levels of existence.

Blue proposes elevating the State to the rank of police officer and regulator of the economy, at times banning the production, sale, or consumption of certain products. Historically, left-wing environmentalist doctrine advocated, for example, banning the sale of SUVs and introducing all sorts of taxes to push the economy to take responsibility. Although technically feasible and potentially effective, these initiatives have all run up against cautious political circles closely tied to economic (orange) interests that prefer the status quo.

The energy of red is embodied by populist leaders elected on slogans like “Make America Great Again” and “Brexit”: let’s expel foreigners, withdraw from our international commitments, and leave the European Union, or, closer to home, ban the construction of minarets. It’s the return of fascism in many European countries, the rise of nationalism and the far right, and a retreat into oneself by placing the blame for all our problems on a minority. This is the same phenomenon that allowed the rise of antisemitism in the early 20th century and, today, it’s directed against foreigners, Muslims, or migrants.

This is roughly where we stand today: close to the breaking point (as in the burnout example) but unable to think or act in any way other than with yesterday’s methods, which generally make the situation even worse. Tension is high; the only remaining question is when we’ll reach the breaking point and what the trigger will be.

Evolution –the paths forward aren’t yet clear. If we go by the evolution of Spiral Dynamics, the level that emerges after orange is green, and it’s on the side of the collective. Will the 2020 health crisis allow for the emergence of a sense of belonging to humanity as a whole and a surge of solidarity that would encourage us to take charge of our collective destiny over individual interests?

Balance – The study of Spiral Dynamics allows us to say that there will be a new balance following this evolution, or the chaos needed to bring it about. We simply aren’t yet able to make out its shape. This balance will allow us to live in congruence with our environment… until the next changing life conditions.

The continuation of this series can be found in the fourth article, titled Spiral Dynamics in the Time of Coronavirus.

NAVIGATING COMPLEXITY, VALUES AND CHANGE

    Why do we resist change? I founded Paradigm21 in 2018 to share 3 years of experience in creating and managing a "distributed" organization. I am committed to supporting the transformation of our society and its institutions. What motivated me to choose to accompany the emergence of a new paradigm Many of us are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of our lifestyles, our food consumption, our energy use and our carbon footprint. A good number of years ago and like so many others, I started a (too) slow shift of my habits towards a fairer, more local, more sustainable consumption. Even though I still see many inconsistencies in my life choices, I am trying to bring awareness and acceptance of my imperfection. It would be wonderful if everyone took this same path, at their own pace and in their own way. Unfortunately however, this would not be enough. The challenges facing humanity and our planet are much greater, whether we are talking about global warming, the disappearance of species or the socio-economic disparities between the different layers of our societies as well as between rich and poor countries. I fear that the individual actions and citizen movements that are underway are far too slow to respond to the urgency of the current situation. In other words, if we don't find a way to get the economy on board, the future does not look good. However, the capitalist system as it was established in the 20th century tends to systematically privilege short-term gains and the creation of shareholder value to the detriment of any other measure. I am not advocating killing capitalism, but there is one principle that needs to be urgently reviewed. It is the one that allows companies to redistribute economic gains to shareholders while the negative impact of economic activities on the environment, health and society is ignored in the balance sheet of economic activity and becomes the responsibility of governments that try as best they can to limit the damage, but without giving themselves the means to do so since they are themselves primarily at the service of the economy. I am certain that the solution will come from the companies themselves and the people within them. What is needed to ensure that the awareness and lifestyle choices of individual employees are also translated into responsible behavior by the companies in which they work? There is very little missing in my opinion. What is needed is a shift in decision-making power from a small group of shareholders to a larger number of employees who are committed to taking their individual and collective responsibilities seriously. It is therefore urgent to put people at the center of the organization and to make room for collective intelligence in strategic choices. But this should not be at the expense of shareholders. As consumption choices also evolve, it will sooner or later become a simple matter of economic survival to be committed to a sustainable activity rather than continuing with the status quo. The new cultural and structural paradigm of organizations that we are accompanying is certainly a way to accelerate this change by starting to put people at the center. I am convinced that the transformation of organizations is a Trojan horse in the world of business and public authorities to enable a societal transformation on a much larger scale. The professional career that led me to do this activityLe parcours professionnel qui m'a amené à exercer mon activité With an engineering degree and an MBA in my pocket, nothing predestined me for this line of work. I dreamt about it for a while during my one-year training as a professional coach, but as I didn't know where to start, I did absolutely nothing. I then moved into conscious entrepreneurship by co-founding ArboLife (the forerunner of Paradigm21) in 2015, which was recognized as a pioneer of the emerging paradigm of organizations in Switzerland. In 2018, it was after following a multitude of synchronicities that I was first inspired to co-create a training on distributed organizations, then attracted our first customers and finally co-found Paradigm21 by inviting other members to come and co-construct the company that we currently know. What is interesting about this experience is that there was never a strategy or goal to do coaching or training in this area, we just responded to what came our way by putting one foot in front of the other. Along the way, however, we have developed common visions for Paradigm21 but these are regularly updated to reflect the reality we experience. The biggest challenge I've faced in my evolution Although I was the initiator of new organizational practices in the different structures that I co-founded, I kept tripping over my old automatisms inherited from a previous career and the management jobs that I held. And today, almost 6 years after I started and despite my experience in training and accompanying other organizations on this same path, I continue to discover behaviors that I have in certain situations that do not support our own way of operating. Every time I think I've covered all the mistakes that can be made on this path of internal and organizational transformation, I stumble upon one more example of a trap I've fallen into. It is thanks to the tensions that my behaviors generate and to the feedbacks of my colleagues, which can be both benevolent and sometimes a little ruthless, that new opportunities for my own evolution are revealed. My favorite book I have many "favorite" books, but one of my latest finds is "The Surrender Experiment" by Micheal Singer. I devoured this book in the summer of 2021 and loved the way the author recounts a 30+ year career path in which he let go of every major decision. That is, instead of having a strategy and executing it by putting aside "non-priority" opportunities, he systematically accepted the opportunities that life presented to him, even if (and especially if) they went against what he had consciously chosen to do. And the result speaks for itself. Following one synchronicity after another, the sequence of events that have occurred is mind-boggling and of a nature that we, too, should trust life and let things that arise spontaneously unfold. If I could have a super power, it would be... To have a magic wand that allows me to free all the people I interact with from limiting beliefs that they are not aware of and open the doors to a world in which they are free to be who they really are and do what matters to them. Of course, I would first test this magic wand on myself. One thing from my bucket list To live a minimalist life in a Tiny House close to nature and with a garden to grow most of the fruits and vegetables to feed myself. The goal is not necessarily autonomy, but at least to drastically reduce my carbon footprint in relation to my consumption and my lifestyle.","url":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/team/marc-mathys/"}]}

Evolution Illustrated with Spiral Dynamics
As examples of evolution with Spiral Dynamics, this article uses burnout and the evolution of our post-industrial society
As examples of evolution with Spiral Dynamics, this article uses burnout and the evolution of our post-industrial society
{"Written by":"Marc Mathys","Est. reading time":"11 minutes
@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/
{"@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/#website
@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/#primaryimage
@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/#primaryimage
{"@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/#/schema/person/7fe66553c3c313bde0b62ad809f13f7b
As examples of evolution with Spiral Dynamics, this article uses burnout and the evolution of our post-industrial society
@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/#breadcrumb
en-US
@type":"ReadAction
https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/"]}]},{"@type":"ImageObject
en-US","@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/#primaryimage
{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/resources/articles/evolution-illustrated-with-spiral-dynamics/#breadcrumb
@type":"ListItem
{"@type":"ListItem
Evolution Illustrated with Spiral Dynamics (3/4)"}]},{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/#website
[{"@type":"SearchAction
@type":"EntryPoint
https://paradigm21.ch/en/?s={search_term_string}
@type":"PropertyValueSpecification
{"@type":"Person","@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/#/schema/person/7fe66553c3c313bde0b62ad809f13f7b
Marc Mathys
@type":"ImageObject
en-US","@id":"https://paradigm21.ch/en/#/schema/person/image/
Specialized in the diagnosis and supporting transformation, I combine Spiral Dynamics, Integral Vision with a human and holarchic approach to organizations.
